Albany Law School’s newest students were greeted with a standing ovation when they were sworn in by U.S. District Judge Mae D’Agostino on the final day of orientation, Monday, August 22, 2016.

This BLOG post is an excerpt from Albany Law School’s webpage: http://www.albanylaw.edu/about/news/current/Pages/Albany-Law-School-Welcomes-Class-of-2019.aspx

“Remember, you’re professionals now, you’re embarking on this great career. So take advantage of everything that Albany Law School and its faculty have to offer to you.”  ~U.S. District Judge Mae D’Agostino

Affirmative action advocates shocked and thrilled by the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in University of Texas Case:  Click HERE

“The Supreme Court’s decision Thursday to uphold race-conscious college admissions came as a welcome surprise to many university officials and civil rights activists, who celebrated the ruling as essential to preserving and promoting diversity in higher education.  Advocates had feared that the court might rule that there was no longer a place for affirmative action in college admissions. Instead, Thursday’s 4-to-3 decision in Fisher v. University of Texas means that universities can continue using race as one of multiple factors in their admissions decisions.”    ~  The Washington Post (6/23/2016)

no more

In one year alone 12.7 million men and women in the U.S. are physically abused, raped or stalked by their partners.  That is approximately the number of people in New York City and Los Angeles combined.  That is 24 people every minute.  These are people we know.

It is time to end the silence and shame for good.
NO MORE Week of Action is a national grassroots activation aimed at making domestic violence and sexual assault awareness and prevention a priority year round.  Check out NO MORE online at www.nomore.org and also on Facebook and Twitter.  There are many ways you can help spread the word.

Join the voices in our Albany Law School community.  Stop by the NO MORE table in the Library Foyer (Monday-Wednesday 11:00 am to 1:00 pm), and tell us what you say NO MORE to.  We’ll take a photo of you with your statement and add it to Albany Law School’s NO MORE webpage.  Your message will also be added to the Statement Wall in the West Foyer.

While you visit the NO MORE table, make a donation to our toiletries drive to benefit the victims of domestic violence receiving assistance from Equinox, Inc.  We are collecting men’s and women’s items including: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, razors, shaving cream and deodorant.

Check for announcements and information throughout the week on MyAlbanyLaw and on the building TV monitors.

Finally, wear blue on Friday to show your support.  Together we can end domestic violence and sexual assault!

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and once again Albany Law School is a partner in the Purple Lights Campaign.  At dusk during the month of October you will see the outdoor lights on the New Scotland Avenue side of the Law School turn bright purple.    Albany Law School’s Candle Light vigil will take place on Thursday, October 8th at 7 p.m. in front of the Law School (New Scotland Avenue area).

We are requesting that you choose a day during the month to wear a piece of purple clothing in remembrance of all victims.

Throughout the year, our students, staff and faculty have worked tirelessly with local courts, government and nonprofit agencies, task forces and coalitions on new initiatives related to domestic violence. This semester alone, our students worked in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady courts assisting in the prosecution of domestic violence crimes through our Albany Law Clinic & Justice Center.

NOTE: In each of the bathrooms and at both security stations on our campus you will find customized brochure holders – holding local confidential support services brochures, share with someone today!   Join the many local colleges and support services members from the many Capital District services providers who will host end of month Candle Light Vigils, and hands projects.

GOVERNOR CUOMO CREATES NEW FELLOWSHIP AND SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS TO HONOR THE LIFE AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF CAREY GABAY

Click HERE for the official announcement:

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the creation of the “Carey Gabay Fellowship” and the “Carey Gabay Scholarship” to honor his life and work. Gabay, a former assistant counsel in the Governor’s Office and First Deputy Counsel to Empire State Development, passed on September 15, 2015, nine days after he was struck by a stray bullet.

“Carey W. Gabay was an exceptional individual who could have done anything, but chose to enter into public service and give back,” Governor Cuomo said. “His kindness, loyalty and grit made him beloved by family, friends and co-workers and his dedication to making New York a better, fairer and safer place made him an inspiration to all. The Fellowship and Scholarship programs bearing his name will serve as a constant reminder of Carey’s professional accomplishments and exceptional character, and will ensure his legacy is honored for years to come.”

The Carey Gabay Fellowship will be awarded every two years to a mid-career attorney who, like Gabay, is committed to public service, hails from an economically disadvantaged background, and most importantly, embodies the integrity and kind-heartedness that distinguished Gabay personally. The Fellow will serve for two years in the Governor’s Counsel’s office, where Gabay began his career in this administration, and will work on furthering the Governor’s violence prevention initiatives as well as issues of economic equality and development that Gabay championed throughout his career. The fellow will be assigned a mentor in Counsel’s office and the first fellow will lead a major research project on violence prevention in memory of Gabay. Opportunities for the fellow to earn an MPA concurrently with state service will be explored. Fellowship attorney applications to be accepted starting January 4, 2016 and will require: a personal statement, three references, a writing sample and impressive academic and professional credentials. The Gabay Fellow will update the Gabay family periodically as to his or her work and experience.

The Carey Gabay Scholarship Program will award, annually, full-ride scholarships to five deserving students to attend the State University of New York. These scholarships will cover all costs of attendance, including tuition, room and board, college fees, books and supplies, and transportation and personal expenses. Many grants and scholarships only cover the cost of tuition, requiring students and families to dip into savings or take out student loans to cover these other necessary college expenses. The Carey Gabay full-ride scholarships will truly cover all college costs, allowing the recipients to focus fully on their coursework, and – like Gabay – to go on to make a difference in their chosen field. The Carey Gabay Scholarship will be available to students at all four-year SUNY colleges, and will be awarded annually beginning in the 2016-17 academic year. These scholarships will be targeted at students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and mentoring skills, and a commitment to social justice, along with other application criteria to be developed in coordination with Carey’s family. Applications will be accepted beginning January 11, 2016, and awards will be selected based on an application package including an essay and letters of recommendation from teachers and community members.
