There is no federal law banning workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and 29 states give employers the right to fire or refuse to hire workers based on sexual orientation.  The announcement by the White House coincides with the Human Rights Campaign’s release of a survey that finds 63 percent of registered voters believe LGBTQ workers should have federal protections against discrimination in the workplace.
