New York City Family Court serves an increasingly diverse population, including LGBTQ youth and families from all backgrounds and experiences. LGBTQ youth are overrepresented in foster care and juvenile justice systems and the subjects of custody and guardianship cases in significant part due to family rejection from parents or guardians. Despite protections in New York law and agency policies, LGBTQ youth still experience disparate treatment from systems, service providers and advocates. For LGBT families, legal issues remain in post-marriage equality New York and New York lags behind other states in legally recognizing ways to create families and protect parent-child relationships.
